Hardware Reliability Benchmarking
Most current hardware benchmarking efforts focus on comparing the acquisition costs of hardware as part of vendor negotiations seeking the best 'discount.' This is valid information, but misses the broader advantages of selecting hardware on the basis of reliability first, and then being able to compare the total-cost-of-ownership of equipment options.

Share and Compare

IT managers understand the importance of reliability, but have lacked metrics to support decisions based upon reliability. Most IT organizations are too small to have a wide enough scope of internal reporting to be useful on a broad scale. Large companies may be capturing data on a larger set of repair problems on their own, but this information is frequently buried in multiple disparate systems with no common descriptions. The result is general blindness on equipment reliability.

Effective and efficient hardware reliability benchmarking is now available as a service from The Advisory Council. Users of IT equipment in all areas are invited to submit their repair history anonymously, and compare their experience to other users in a benchmark format covering comparisons between equipment category, equipment type, manufacturers, specific models, model series, and parts.

The results of focusing on reliability have positive effects throughout IT. Repairs, even when covered by warranty, are inconvenient at best and always carry hidden costs. Service to users is improved. Managers can target problematic products for replacement, and extend the useful life of stable products confidently. Service Level Agreements and post-warranty break-fix can be evaluated and bid based on the repair needs of the equipment, instead of the profit needs of the vendor. Finally, by focusing on reliability as a core value for your organization, the entire vendor community will react by manufacturing more reliable products and more rational service plans.

Engaging with TAC for a TekTrakker® benchmark is an off-line service with no requirements to standardize data or modify existing systems.
